San Francisco Airports:
Tips for SFO

Get tips on flying in and out of the largest of the three San Francisco airports – SFO including info on San Francisco transportation and finding your SFO flight status.

SFO is the largest airport in the bay area. It is also the main airport that covers the city of San Francisco and neighboring communities.

SFO is serviced by 42 airlines. Hundreds of flights take off and land at San Francisco International Airport every day. It’s located just 20 minutes south of the city.

It’s the best choice of San Francisco airports for those spending most or all of their time in the heart of San Francisco. It’s easy to get to and from the city because you don’t have to cross any major bridges to get to the city from this airport.

Flying to SFO might cost you a little bit more money than some of the other airport options in the bay area. However, those extra dollars are worth it due to its convenience to the city and the lower cost for getting to and from the airport.

San Francisco Transportation Options

The other great thing about flying into the largest of the San Francisco airports is that you have a number of San Francisco transportation options. The best option is to take a shuttle from the airport into the city if you have just one or two people in your party.

If you have more than 2 people, you’ll save money if you take a cab or use a car service. The cost of a taxi from the airport to Union Square will cost around $50 + tip (and $2 airport fee). The cost of a taxi from the airport to Fisherman’s Wharf will cost around $55 + tip (and $2 airport fee).

If you want to save even more money and are comfortable with public transportation, then you can take BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). This is the train system that services the bay area.

The station is located near the international terminal and it will only cost around $6 per person to get to Union Square. The BART trains are really safe and clean (usually!), so it’s a great option if you don’t mind taking the extra time to get into the city and want to save a little money.

You can also rent a car. However, if you are staying in the city, you’ll have huge parking fees in addition to your car rental and hotel. Also, it’s tough to park in the city so you might get a little frustrated if you plan on driving around and trying to park near the various sites.

Another option is to take one of the many options for an airport shuttle in San Francisco. This is another great way to get to and from SFO.

If you are spending just a few days in the city and then head outside the city for a few days where you’ll need a car, then you can also rent a car once you get into the city.

Overall, flying into the largest of the three San Francisco airports is the best option for those spending all or most of their time in the heart of the action in San Francisco.

If you are traveling to a different part of the San Francisco bay area, you should also look at flight options at the Oakland California Airport or the San Jose CA Airport. Both are smaller airport, but have about a hundred different flights flying in and out each day.
